National Design Home Receives Glass Block Mural Donation

UDLL Incorporates Energy-Efficient Glass Block Mural into Interior Design Plan

COLUMBUS, OH – April 25, 2010 – The Universal Design Living Laboratory (UDLL), national demonstration home of the future, installed an energy-efficient glass block mural in the master shower with the help of Columbus Glass Block. The glass will allow plenty of light into the bathroom thanks to Pittsburgh Corning’s unique utilization of materials, the company responsible for the manufacture of the glass blocks.

“Helping out with the Universal Design Living Laboratory was a great fit for Pittsburgh Corning,” said Mary Lynn Bruce, Market Product Manager. “Not only is the home architecturally stunning, it offers the highest level of functionality and independence for all individuals. It’s a great project and one that we are honored to be a part of.” The mural will reduce the amount of energy needed to brighten the bathroom, reducing its residents’ carbon footprint.

The mural, created by Cogir USA, incorporates the use of multiple colors through a stunning aquarium themed design. “The colors in the mural will be a focal point for the colors in the flooring, countertop, towels and walls,” says UDLL project leader Rosemarie Rossetti Ph.D. “Our interior designer, Anna Lyon, noted that the home now has a “WOW factor” even greater than anticipated.”

Columbus Glass Block, responsible for the mural’s installation, used a cutting edge system called Vinyl Stack to complete the installation. This system uses vinyl strips within the blocks which are then fabricated into panels and placed into the opening of the window.

“We were delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the Universal Design Living Laboratory project,” states Mike Foti, President of Columbus Glass Block. “The UDLL project is just the type of initiative to make a larger impact and improve the quality of life in one of our most important financial assets – the home.”

The incorporation of the glass block mural is one of the many efforts the Universal Design Living Laboratory is taking to create a home that promotes energy-efficient design and serves as an example for homebuilders in the future.
