Universal Design: The New Frontier in Home Construction

International Expert Offers First-Hand Benefits of Universal Design

Columbus, Ohio – May 24, 2012 – On June 13, 1998, Rosemarie Rossetti’s dream home became a waking nightmare. Rosemarie was left paralyzed from the waist down after a 3.5 ton tree came crashing down on her during a bike ride with her husband. While using a wheelchair for mobility, she faced substantial challenges she had never imagined. The home they had built together, the bulwark of their hopes and future had become her source of unrelenting frustration.

Instead of simply accepting the household that no longer accommodated her, Rosemarie chose to champion the cause of universal design; culminating in the construction and completion of the Universal Design Living Laboratory.

By definition, universal design is a framework for the design of living and working spaces and products, benefiting the widest possible range of people in the widest range of situations without special or separate design. Rossetti says “A home with universal design principles certainly makes life easier, not only for those with mobility limitations, but also for those who are young, old, short or tall.”

Encompassing architecture with a strong emphasis on ergonomics as well as aesthetics, universal design is rapidly becoming the benchmark for home creation of the future.

Along with her extensive knowledge on the benefits of universal design, Rosemarie Rossetti can offer your readers tips on:

  • Preparing for a multigenerational household

  • Overcoming the challenges of accommodating older generations

  • Creating a ‘disability-friendly’ home

Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized speaker and advocate for people with disabilities. Along with her husband, Mark Leder, she is spearheading the Universal Design Living Laboratory (www.UDLL.com), a national project to help people better understand how to create a more comfortable living environment that will enhance their quality of life. As a keynote speaker, she shares the lessons she has learned since a tragic accident left her paralyzed from the waist down, and demonstrates how to rise above misfortune and live life with conviction.
