With rising health care costs & disability challenges, today’s Boomer generation wants to age at home …
with independence, safety and peace of mind.

Are you ready to meet their demands?

From:  Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D.
Columbus Ohio

Dear Friend,

There’s a revolution taking place in the building/home design/renovation industries. The aging Baby Boomer population is thinking about retirement and aging in a different way than past generations.

And they are demanding living options that meet their increasingly sophisticated needs -- and expectations.

Are you prepared to deliver?

If you’re a builder, remodeler, developer, realtor, architect, interior designer, occupational therapist …

If you market products or services to customers or clients in middle age or older

… this can be an urgent wakeup call about the future of your business.

Why? Because this huge and rapidly growing demographic sees themselves living independently in a sustainable home that provides:

  • Exceptional safety features
  • Ease and functionality
  • High levels of independence
  • Accessibility and comfort
  • Frustration-free use of bathrooms, kitchens, appliances, cabinets, closets
  • Multi-generational living space
  • Design adaptability

People today are living longer – and better. They’re more actively engaged in life – and don’t want to give up their freedom as they age.

They expect “home” to be place that provides independence, accessibility, safety and peace of mind – despite disabilities, limitations and health challenges. A growing proportion of this population are choosing to stay in their homes for as long as possible to avoid moving to assisted living or nursing facilities.

This growing movement  isn’t restricted only to aging.  It applies, as well, to people with:

Sudden Health Changes

  • Accidents
  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury

Degenerative conditions

  • Arthritis
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Dementia

  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's disease

Little wonder so many “Boomers” are choosing to live in a  sustainable home  that provides:

  • Exceptional safety features
  • Ease and functionality
  • High levels of independence
  • Accessibility and comfort
  • Frustration-free use of bathrooms, kitchens, appliances, cabinets, closets
  • Multi-generational living space
  • Design adaptability

Whether you’re prepared or not, the demand is real – and it’s growing and strengthening rapidly.

The good news is … so are the enormous opportunities this focus on accessible living brings to your business!

The enormous 50+ Boomer market can be a continual sales magnet for you  – but only if you know how to address their specific needs, fears and priorities.

When you do … when you provide the right features, products, services and support to help this population more gracefully live in place …you’ve hit a virtual gold mine.

How do you enter this Gold Mine of opportunity?

By understanding and adapting the principles of  Universal Design .

Universal Design refers to the design of products and environments that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

With a shortage of housing to accommodate aging Boomers, along with a disabled population that’s steadily growing, the need for Universal Design solutions has increased dramatically.

We responded to this demand by creating the Universal Design Toolkit.

What is the Universal Design Toolkit?

Pictured items are for illustration only.  The Toolkit is a downloadable PDF - the videos are viewable online.

The A-to-Z ultimate resource, reference and guide for anyone in the building, remodeling, architecture, real estate, interior design, physical and occupational therapy industries. It includes all the tips, tools, stats and advice on using Universal Design elements to build your business – or build a home for yourself or your clients.

More than 10 years of research were distilled into relevant, timely and practical information you can use to attract, satisfy and ensure positive approval from new and existing clients.

The impressively comprehensive Universal Design Toolkit is filled with:
  • Clarifying Insights that distinguish vital benefits and principles from the myths of Universal Design.
  • Proven, realistic tips to market your business.
  • Tools and techniques you need laid out for you. Nothing is assumed or left out.
  • Photographs that provide a frame of reference to inspire, clarify and illuminate features and benefits.
  • Valuable resources to save you time, money and energy.
  • Handy home checklists and assessments.
  • Client interview questions and answers.
  • Helpful sources of funding.

  • Space planning dimensions for access using assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers.
  • And much, much more!

The Universal Design Toolkit is new … unique … and is the only resource of its kind.

I know because I wrote it.

Along with my husband Mark Leder we built the world’s first and only Universal Design Living Laboratory.

The Universal Design Living Laboratory

The UDLL is not just a laboratory. It’s an actual home – in fact it’s our home – and it incorporates all the features, accessibility, convenience and long-life benefits desired and expected from a sustainable home.

Located in Columbus, OH, our Universal Design Living Laboratory is a national demonstration home and garden. It’s the top rated universal design home in North America ... has earned 3 Universal Design Certifications … and has been toured by over 2,300 industry professionals, educators, students and Baby Boomers.

The Universal Design Living Laboratory Story

The UDLL story is my story – a very personal story. I share it with you as a warning about how fragile – and transformative – life can be.

Close to twenty years ago, on a sunny afternoon bicycle ride,  a 3½-ton tree came crashing down on me.  My life was changed in that instant! I was paralyzed from the waist down with a spinal cord injury. I have used a wheelchair ever since.

During my extensive rehabilitation I was determined to get my life back. I wanted a full recovery. I wanted the pain to go away. I wanted to do things for myself again. Every day I pushed myself harder. I was determined to regain the most basic of life skills: feeding myself, grooming, moving in bed, sitting up, pushing myself in a wheelchair.

When I returned home from the hospital I quickly realized how disabling my home was for me.

  • Fifty percent of my home was now inaccessible.
  • Stairs prevented me from using the basement or second floor.
  • Many room doorways were too narrow to fit through.
  • I couldn’t go out the back door and down the steps to my backyard garden.
  • In the kitchen, I couldn’t reach into the wall cabinets -- not even a glass for a drink of water.
  • I couldn’t reach the water faucet at the sink.
  • I couldn’t enter many of the closets because the doorways were too narrow.
  • I couldn’t reach clothing rods and shelves in the closet.
  • I couldn’t turn around in the hallways because they were too narrow.
  • I couldn’t use the bathroom toilet area because I couldn’t get in. A door had to be removed, but I lost my privacy.
  • I couldn’t use my bathtub.
  • Towel bars that were out of reach.

And that was just a sampling …

I struggled to be independent again – to do things for myself. Everywhere I turned there were frustrating barriers, obstacles and limitations.

I was handicapped by a spinal cord injury … and now my home intensified my disability.

Our dream home had turned into a nightmare!

For five years after the injury we adapted, renovated and transformed our home to accommodate the frustrations of my new realty. It didn’t work.

We finally realized that the home we built just three years before my injury, would never fully meet my need for independence, mobility, safety, comfort and convenience.

The home we loved would require drastic reconfigurations, costing more than the home’s value. The expense would not be worth the investment.

We knew we had to find another alternative. And after extensive research, travel and investigation we discovered the  life-supporting benefits of Universal Design.

Universal Design is human-centered design, accommodating people of all sizes, ages, and abilities. A home designed with universal design principles makes life remarkably easier -- not only for those with mobility limitations -- but also for those who are young, old, short or tall.

Statistics show most of us are living longer and the median age is increasing. In fact, 25% of the population will be 65 or older in just 4 years.

Many are looking to move – but not to assisted living! They are looking to downsize, remodel or find step-free, hazard-free environments. You can capitalize on this "new normal" by adapting the concepts and applications of Universal Design: ease-of-use, convenience, accessibility, and independence at home regardless of age or ability.

What makes the Universal Design Toolkit your must-have resource?

What Experts Are Saying About Our Solution

John Doe UI/UX Designer

If you are looking for that one book that explains this important but often misunderstood subject, this is it."

“Rosemarie Rossetti’s new book provides an immensely valuable guide and toolkit for anyone interested in applying Universal Design principles within their own homes—new or remodeled. For years, I’ve been looking for a tool like this one, that is not all just rules and dimensions, but that actually gives a view into the way that Universal Design can change lives, making the home a friend that supports life, as it is supposed to be, rather than an obstacle to living fully. Through her own story of suddenly changed mobility, she describes the search for solutions and the dramatic and truly stellar result of her efforts. She eloquently shares that journey, and the expertise that she’s garnered along the way—an expertise now accessible to all.

Rosemarie’s life challenge has become that kind of lens that brings real understanding to the world of Universal Design. I will be using this book and toolkit for many years to come, as I hope you will also. If you are looking for that one book that explains this important but often misunderstood subject, this is it.”

“...the book has a place for anyone working in the field of UD such as REALTORS®, CAPS specialists, architects, builders, and developers..."

"The Universal Design Toolkit is a very useful and comprehensive manual for anyone interested in the concept of Universal Design. The author Rosemarie Rossetti, is passionate about the topic since she has lived through events that require UD concepts in her home. She has educated herself on UD, compiled extensive resources, and written the book so it is not just a cookbook to introduce UD, but a heartfelt narrative on one person’s personal story. I think the book has a place for anyone working in the field of UD such as REALTORS®, CAPS specialists, architects, builders, and developers, and anyone that has the ability to help people live in an environment that has no barriers to the people living there. I highly recommend this book.”

“These features are highly marketable to mainstream home buyers.”

“This book takes the reader on Rosemarie Rossetti’s amazing and inspiring personal and professional journey leading ultimately to the creation of her Universal Design Living Laboratory (UDLL). The UDLL is both a home for she and her husband Mark, as well as a demonstration site.

The book chronicles the process of designing the home, selecting products, managing construction, and its evolution into the place it is now. There are lessons here for anyone who is embarking on a home design/build process.

The home has much to recommend. It nicely displays numerous generic UD features that everyone can take advantage of, virtually every day: graded,step-free entrance; gracious open-plan interior; curbless shower; level exit back patio; hand held shower; lever door handles; raised outlets; lowered wall controls; front control appliances; elevator; home technology; and many more.

These features are highly marketable to mainstream home buyers. While not all the product selections are low-cost, the basic functionality of the home can be adapted to almost any budget.

The home demonstrates how UD homes benefit everyone every day and REALLY benefits us at certain points in our lives or those of us with certain life circumstances. Because, not only does the house showcase great UD, it also shows what you can do if you need to add custom features for example, lowered kitchen work surfaces with kneespace for seated users.

The Toolkit has cost information, and extensive checklists and resources listings. This is a very useful book for anyone who is thinking about designing and building differently, or who is wondering what type of features they might like to include in their next home.”
