The Rosemarie Rossetti Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund

The Ohio State UniversityRosemarie Rossetti started this fund in July 2001 in order to advance the cure for spinal cord injuries. She has a long history with The Ohio State University and Dodd Hall. When she was injured, she spent five weeks in rehabilitation there as a patient. For the next two years, she continued her physical therapy at Dodd Hall.

Spinal ColumnDodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital at The Ohio State University Medical Center performs innovative research, and provides state-of-the-art medical treatment for people with spinal cord injuries. Current research projects focus on problems related to restoring walking ability for people with spinal cord injuries. These studies include:

  • Evaluating spinal cord reflexes which produce leg movement.
  • Experimental treatments stimulate the reflexes that produce useful movement and inhibit the reflexes that interfere with walking. Investigations include both exercise and medications for treatment.

Research is also being done on the problems of osteoporosis and muscle atrophy which can follow spinal cord injury. The full recovery of walking will require strong bones and healthy muscles that are controlled by the nerves of the spinal cord.

Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital at The Ohio State University Medical Center is the only facility in central Ohio which is accredited for treatment of spinal cord injury by CARF (the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and is one of America's best hospitals for rehabilitation.
